Blood Diamond is a tough watch. It is loud, violent, and emotionally exhausting. But it is also masterful storytelling. Zwick never lets the action overshadow the tragedy. You will root for Archer even when he lies, and you will cry for Solomon even when he wins.
If you’ve ever looked at a gleaming gem in a jewelry store window and felt a tiny twinge of curiosity about where it came from, Blood Diamond is the cinematic sledgehammer that answers that question. Starring Leonardo DiCaprio, Djimon Hounsou, and Jennifer Connelly, this 2006 Edward Zwick film is far more than a standard action thriller. It’s a harrowing history lesson wrapped in a chase movie.
