Desperate for shelter, Sunder stumbles upon a large, eerie, abandoned bungalow. The locals warn him it’s haunted, but with no other option, he breaks in and decides to spend the night. In the middle of the night, the ghost of Bhairavnath "Bhairao" (Naseeruddin Shah)—a witty, flamboyant, and sharp-dressed gangster who was killed by rivals decades ago—appears. Instead of being terrifying, Bhairao is funny, sarcastic, and bored of haunting the house alone.
With Bhairao’s invisible help (moving objects, creating illusions, giving witty advice), Sunder lands a job as a gardener at Namrata’s college. He impresses her with his honesty, and romance blossoms. However, the villain Mohan (Raza Murad), a rich and powerful man, also wants Namrata.
