Meera’s grandmother told the same story she told every Diwali: how, as a girl in 1947, she had crossed the new border with nothing but a sindoor box and a copper lota. “We lost our home,” she said, “but not our fire.”

She brought the bottle of mustard oil. As she poured a golden drop into each lamp, her father, Rohan, came up the stairs. He was a weaver. His hands were cracked, but his eyes were soft.
