The year 2022 marked a significant period of recovery and experimentation for the Hindi film industry (Bollywood) following the COVID-19 pandemic. However, it also witnessed the continued proliferation of online piracy platforms, most notably Hindimovies4u. This paper examines Hindimovies4u as a case study to analyze the ecosystem of unauthorized digital distribution of Hindi cinema in 2022. It explores the platform’s operational methods (including domain mirroring and SEO strategies), the economic and artistic impact on the film industry, the legal framework against piracy in India, and the paradoxical user demand for accessibility and affordability that fuels such websites. The paper concludes that while legal streaming platforms (OTT) have expanded, sites like Hindimovies4u persist by exploiting gaps in pricing, release windows, and digital literacy.
