What could have been a messy, honest exploration of grief, power dynamics, and female desire becomes a safe, moralistic fable. The film punishes Elya’s sexuality while simultaneously selling it. The infamous “naughty” behavior is ultimately tamed, replaced by a conventional happy ending that feels unearned. The supporting characters (the best friend, the ex-fiancé) are cardboard cutouts who exist only to move the plot forward.

To its credit, the film looks expensive. The lighting is warm, the interiors are sleek, and the camera lingers on the actors’ faces with an intimacy that suggests deeper emotion. Anna Peskova and Nikita Volkov (playing the father, Andrey) share genuine physical chemistry. Their scenes together are tense, charged, and easily the most watchable parts of the film.
