Her arc is terrifying because she isn't just evil for the sake of it. She is a master manipulator who almost succeeds in tearing apart the Charmings from the inside. The reveal of her past with Rumplestiltskin adds a layer of tragic romance to the villainy that OUAT does so well. One of the boldest moves of Season 2 is ruining the "purest" love story. Snow White and Prince Charming (David) are supposed to be the epitome of goodness. But when Cora forces them into a moral dilemma— sacrificing a town of people to save their own—they make the selfish choice.
He arrives seeking revenge on Rumplestiltskin, but what he actually does is shake up the romantic dynamics. The chemistry between Emma and Hook is electric from their very first scene in the Enchanted Forest. While Mary Margaret frets over David back home, Emma is busy trading barbs and tension with a dashing pirate. It marks the beginning of the "Captain Swan" ship that would eventually sail for years. If Regina was the villain of Season 1, her mother, Cora (the Queen of Hearts), is the nightmare fuel of Season 2. Played brilliantly by Barbara Hershey, Cora is a sociopath who rips hearts out (literally) without a second thought.
