Telugu Prajalu Hollywood Dubbed Movies 〈SECURE〉

Abstract This paper examines the phenomenon of Hollywood films dubbed into the Telugu language and their reception among Telugu-speaking audiences ( Telugu Prajalu ). Traditionally, the Telugu film industry (Tollywood) has dominated regional entertainment. However, the last decade has witnessed a seismic shift wherein dubbed Hollywood content—particularly from Marvel, DC, and franchise action series—has not only gained acceptance but has consistently outperformed local productions at the box office. This paper analyzes the historical evolution, market economics, linguistic adaptation strategies, and socio-cultural implications of this trend. It argues that the success of dubbed Hollywood movies is not merely a result of superior visual effects but a complex interplay of linguistic nativization, aspirational consumption, and the strategic failure of Tollywood to cater to specific audience segments. 1. Introduction The state of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, home to over 85 million Telugu speakers, possesses one of the most vibrant and insular film industries in India. For decades, Tollywood operated on a simple premise: Telugu audiences prefer Telugu stories, songs, and stars. Hollywood, despite its global dominance, remained a niche interest for urban, English-educated elites. However, the release of Avatar (2009) in dubbed Telugu marked a turning point. By 2019, Avengers: Endgame collected over ₹40 crore in the Telugu states alone—more than many blockbuster Telugu films.
