is a kind-hearted, middle-class girl who lives nearby with her widowed father, a retired schoolteacher. She loves Vikram’s music and the two are childhood sweethearts. The Promise Vikram and Sunita are deeply in love. However, Sunita’s father is orthodox and wants her to marry a wealthy, settled man. Vikram has no money, no job, and no social status.

A subtitle appears on screen in English: Final Frame: Vikram places his hand on Sunny’s head and looks at Sunita. Vikram: “This time… I will keep every promise.”

But Vikram overhears this. The shock – and the sight of Sunita crying – triggers his full memory. Vikram remembers everything: the hill town, the promise, the letters, the betrayal he unknowingly committed, and the son he never knew.

Meanwhile, Sunita waits faithfully, but her father falls seriously ill. To pay for his treatment, she takes a job. She keeps writing to Vikram, but her letters are never received. Vikram becomes a big singing star. Rita confesses her love and offers him everything – fame, money, a record label. Vikram (Rishi Kapoor) is a poor but talented musician who dreams of becoming a famous singer. He lives with his widowed mother and spends his days playing the harmonium and writing songs.

Rita, realizing she cannot buy love, finally lets him go. The film ends with Vikram, Sunita, and Sunny walking together in the same hills where they once met as lovers. Vikram sings their song softly. Sunita smiles through tears.

Sunny says, “You look like the man in my mother’s old photo.”

Rita finds out about Sunita and Sunny. She confronts Sunita and cruelly says, “He is mine now. You and your bastard child mean nothing.”

When Sunita learns that Vikram is marrying someone else, she is heartbroken but says nothing. Her father dies of shock and shame. Sunita is left completely alone. Sunita discovers she is pregnant with Vikram’s child (from before he left). She doesn’t tell him because she doesn’t want to ruin his marriage and career. Vikram follows the boy home and meets Sunita. Though he doesn’t remember her, his heart aches. Sunita realizes who he is but does not reveal the truth, fearing it will break his fragile mental state. Sunny becomes a regular visitor. Vikram begins to regain small flashes of memory – a harmonium, a song, a promise under a tree. He starts humming the tune of the song he wrote for Sunita years ago.

One night, Vikram and Sunita meet secretly. Sunita says, “Without you, I cannot live.” Vikram promises: “I will become a successful singer. I will return and marry you. Yeh vaada raha – this promise remains.”

Rita, more concerned with her social status than his happiness, hides him away in a luxurious but lonely mansion, hoping his memory will return. Sunny, now about 7 years old, wanders into Vikram’s mansion garden while playing. Vikram, lonely and confused, sees the boy and feels an instant, unexplainable connection.

He leaves the town to go to Bombay (Mumbai) to try his luck in the film music industry. In Bombay, Vikram struggles initially but soon gets a break. He meets Rita (Tina Munim) , the beautiful, rich, and spoiled daughter of a powerful music baron. Rita is attracted to Vikram’s raw talent and charm.
